How you can live a life of meaning

We are all searching for meaning in our lives.

Patricia couldn’t wait to become mega rich so she could live an amazing life.  A successful top-level executive with an impressive salary, she knew exactly what she would do with the money.  Buy a mansion near the beach, a sportscar (or two), a boat, and travel the world.  Then retire and live the perfect life, lazing on the beach – paradise!

Just shy of her 50th birthday, Patricia had achieved all of these things.  She had the beautiful house, car, boat and a wonderful family.

Yet she felt an empty void, like something was missing.

It took less than two weeks for Patricia to become tired of lying around on the beach all day.  She was not on ‘holiday’ as there was no work to ‘escape’ from.  She just wasn’t excited about anything anymore, and felt completely unfulfilled.

So she sought life coaching.

What Patricia suddenly realised is that her whole life had been a mad rush to acquire more ‘stuff’.  But walking into a shop and buying more clutter now felt utterly meaningless - there had to be more to life than this.

It dawned on her that meaning is not found in ‘things’.

Patricia learnt that she needed to contribute to something beyond herself  in order to feel fulfilled - and now she is doing just that.  She now directs a program that provides support to families in poorer countries who have been devastated by trauma, to help them get back on their feet.

She gets to fulfil her dream of travelling the world, and because she is building something worthwhile that she is passionate about, the experience is tenfold more rewarding.

Today she is living a fulfilling, meaningful, spiritually abundant life.

Patricia says, ”I never really knew what spirituality was, now I understand.  We all have a basic desire to find meaning and purpose in life, but most of us have it back to front.  We need to work on changing our internal world.  Then, our external world changes automatically.”

You can live a passionate, fulfilling, meaningful life too.

All you need to do is decide that you want more out of life, and be committed to the process.

Everything else, you will learn.

These are some common thoughts people have when they consider life coaching…

“I would love to achieve more out of life, but I don’t believe I am capable of being/having more.”

“I’d love to unlock my potential, but I don’t know how.”

I would love to live an extraordinary life, but I’m just not “that sort of person” (eg. Confident, a go-getter, organised).

This is like saying, “I would love to be fit, but a personal trainer couldn’t help me because I’m not the sort of person who knows what type of exercises I should be doing”.

The process of life coaching involves breaking things down into smaller steps.  For example, let’s say that you want to become a public speaker, but you don’t believe it is a possibility for you because you feel fearful.  This can be broken down.  Firstly, I could tell you that need to “believe in yourself”, but that sort of abstract advice provides no direction if you don’t know how to do it.  There is a strategy to believing, and what I will do is provide specific, concise steps that will teach you exactly how to believe you can have it.

Secondly, fear can also be broken down into smaller steps.  If you feel fearful about stepping outside of your comfort zone, it doesn’t mean that you are unsuitable for life coaching – it means that you are normal!  I  will demonstrate to you that fear is a strategy, and walk you through the process of moving beyond fear, by breaking it down into smaller components with specific steps that you can take.

Whatever is holding you back from your decision to invest in life coaching,

is exactly the thing that coaching will help you break through.

If you can picture yourself at the end of your life having regrets about unused potential, you have the chance to act now.  If you wait until you get there, it will be too late.

“Don’t worry about failures, worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try.”
