Life is about taking risks. If you think that avoiding risks will keep you safe, then are you taking the biggest risk of all? Helen Keller said “Security is superstition, it doesn’t exist in nature.” A lot of people go through life trying to acquire as many things as they can. But the more possessions we acquire, the more we have to lose. Then the less likely we are to take risks, because we’re too busy spending all of our time protecting what we ‘have’, which we don’t really have at all. If something can be taken away from us, we never really had it in the first place. What’s truly yours is an eternal part of you.

All we have is our eternal spirit, and, for now, a body. Attachment to worldly things disconnects us from what is important in life. We should enjoy the ‘things’ that are made available to us, and use them to enhance our quality and enjoyment of life, but not become attached to them. For instance, we can use instruments to make beautiful music. We can use paint to create a work of art. These actions are not about the things, but the connection to soul. Through connection to soul, we experience beauty, creativity, relaxation, peace and love. When we become obsessed with ownership and accumulation, our experiences are instead associated with attachment, fear and greed. The greed of always wanting more. The fear of losing it all and the subsequent attachment that inhibits us from taking risks.

Achieving anything worthwhile in life involves taking risks. In order to love, we risk getting hurt. Connecting with others risks rejection. Displaying emotion risks vulnerability. To live is to risk dying. If you are afraid to take risks, you need to ask yourself what you are trying to protect. In most cases, it will be just the familiarity and safety of your comfort zone. So the irony of this might surprise you. When too much time is spent dwelling inside your comfort zone, it becomes the danger zone.

We need to take risks in order to grow. Growth requires courage. Courage arises when we act in spite of fear, and fear is a product of the unknown. We must stop waiting until we have all of the information before acting, because we will never have all of the information. What we don’t know is what we will learn through taking action, and this is what we call experience. Life is waiting to reward those who take risks. We must embrace uncertainty and take risks, or face the biggest risk of all: the reality of wasted, unused potential. The realisation that Groundhog Day was not just a movie – it was your life.

Speaking of risks, did you know that I offer a full money back guarantee on all traditional life coaching packages? That means that I take all of the risk for you, because my biggest goal is seeing you reach yours. Contact me now to book an appointment.

My partner and I recently stayed at a resort that was rated four and a half star. Naturally, a 4.5 star property was what we expected, but this did not appear to be the case. The reception area was empty, with nobody around to be seen that could check us in. It was a hot night, and there was no air conditioning in the room – not even a fan. We had to open our own bottle of champagne at dinner. The waitress didn’t know what the soup of the day was and had to run back to the bar to check. There was no cracked pepper offered with the meals, and no fresh lime for the drinks.

Now the last two issues might seem insignificant, but it is the small details such as these that make a 4.5 star resort what it is. This brought my partner and I to an interesting conclusion: Had the resort not tried to be something they are not, we would have had little reason to criticize. A hotel rating is provided to give you an expectation of a particular standard. When you are given a 4.5 star rating, you are going to compare it to other 4.5 star properties. Now if the resort had rated themseves as 3.5 star, we would have been pleasantly surprised at the experience, and would have recommended it to others.

Instead of noticing all of the things that would be expected in a 4.5 star resort that were missing, we would have instead noticed all of the extra things that it did have that would normally not be expected in a 3.5 star resort. Such as the fabulous location, the beautiful building and gorgeous interior decorations, the ambient dining room, a tranquil water view to gaze at and a lovely cosy fireplace to sit by with a glass of post dinner cognac. The food was also great for bistro style meals (but you don’t expect bistro style meals at a resort that is almost 5 star). If you checked into a motel, it would be understandable that the receptionist often doubles as the cleaner or bartender, and you know that when the desk is unattended, they are probably busy cleaning the rooms. But for a 4.5 star resort, this is unprofessional, and it is the rating that makes it so. Upon checking online later on, similar reviews by other guests echoed our thoughts. The main sentiment was “This is not a 4.5 star hotel”.

We did not have a bad experience, because we chose to view the resort as 3.5 star and be impressed, rather than continue to expect 4.5 star and be disappointed. Everything is perception, and the quality of your experience depends on what you are comparing it to. We had high expectations when we walked in, but then simply lowered our expectations in order to better enjoy the experience. But from the reviews we read online, it was clear that a lot of people were unneccessarily walking away disappointed and telling others about it; and it seemed such a waste of a lovely 3.5 star resort that simply over-promised and under-delivered on what it advertised.

In your own life, are you ever pretending to be someone you are not? So many people go through life pretending to be someone else, because they either think it will impress others, or they worry that being authentic isn’t good enough for others. People can sense when you are trying to be something you are not, and it immediately breeds distrust. No matter how much you may fear being yourself, you will be much more attractive to others when you do. When you are being you, your light shines the brightest, and others can feel it even if you can’t. Unless you are an actor, there is no reason why you would ever need to be someone else. Not only is it hard work and a waste of energy to keep up the facade, but everyone else is already taken.

If you think that your natural genuine self is not good enough for people and you are guilty of hiding under a false exterior, this does not mean that there is something wrong with you. The world is full of people who are afraid of being themselves; it is much more common than you might think. Some people spend their entire lives wearing a protective shield (so to speak). We learn from a young age that being vulnerable will get us hurt, but then the shield becomes a part of us that is forgotten to be removed. Little do we know that the shield is false strength, because it in fact blocks our true strength, which is our light that shines from within. There is not a soul in the world that is identical to yours, so expressing yourself is the only part you need to play.

You need to get back in touch with yourself, and reconnect with the true you. Your authenticity is the best gift you can give yourself and others. If you don’t believe me, you simply haven’t opened your gift yet, and you are comparing yourself to gifts that are already unwrapped. Until you turn your awareness inward and reconnect with who you really are, a sense of unease will remain, and you will continue to search externally for the solution.

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” – Anais Nin.

Have you ever noticed that as soon as you choose to be irritated by something, you suddenly have a hundred other things to irritate you? First you get caught up in a traffic jam. Then the person using the ATM while you’re waiting in line fumbles around and takes twice as long as normal. Then you drop your keys, and so on. Let me tell you why you keep attracting the same problems.

You are attracting into your life certain situations for a reason. Everything in the universe (including thoughts) is energy, and therefore subject to the laws of physics. Whatever thoughts and feelings you are emitting, you are becoming a magnet for experiences of a similar energy. You might have always thought that things in life just “happen” to you randomly, and you have no control over them, but this is not so. The “bad luck” could have ended with the traffic jam, but because you kept telling yourself “This is so annoying, this is so annoying,” the cycle continues on.

Have a think about what you are attracting into your life at the moment. Now, have a think about what you would like to be attracting. Is it the same? If you seem to be attracting a lot of situations into your life that you don’t want, it is time to sit up and pay attention. What you focus on includes what you picture in your mind, what you think about, what you look at, read about or listen to, what you tell yourself, what you tell others, and what you believe. Once you start to recognise the ways in which you attract situations in your life, you will be much more empowered to gain control of them. Let’s take a look at some of the common examples of how you may be continuing the “run of back luck”…

Constantly telling people about your irritations: “you’ll never believe the bad day I have had so far. First there was this… then this…”,

Telling yourself in your mind how annoyed and frustrated you are, or how <insert insult here> someone else is

Disempowering body language and facial expressions. Eg. frowning, stiff shoulders, slumped over, arms crossed or hands on hips

Exaggerated, over-the-top language: “I am absolutely livid that someone was rude to me!”

Focusing on what you don’t want “I wish I wasn’t so fat, how can I lose weight, I need to eat low-fat foods

Planning an upcoming situation in your mind and picturing it going badly

If any of the above strategies are familiar to you, then you need to start becoming aware of the energy that you are emitting. Now that you know what not to do, you can begin making slight changes in your behaviour that will start attracting the outcomes you would like by changing your language, behaviour, and focus to something that is positive and empowering.

Are you being what you want to attract? If you want money, are you expressing abundance? If you want more love, are you being loving? If you want more happiness, are you being happy? Most people go through life focusing on what they don’t want, and then wonder why they get more of it, instead of whatever it is that they do want. There is no point in waiting for love/happiness/success if you are focusing on a lack of these things. The more you feel that you are lacking something, the more of that lack you will notice. You need to start emitting the vibrations that you want (eg. happiness) first, and then the universe will match your vibration and send those same frequencies back to you. The universe is your boomerang. Whatever you throw out there by means of focusing on it, is what will come back to you.

If you are single and attracting the same ‘type’ of person, there is a reason for it. Do you regularly say to yourself or others that all men are liars? That all women want is your money? If you keep attracting the same problem, what are these people who are coming into your life here to teach you? What do you need to change within yourself?

You will continue to attract what you continue to focus on. If you are still attracting the same people or situations that you don’t want, you have not yet learnt your lesson. You need to address the problem at the root cause. Once you identify how you have created the situation, your awareness will shift, and the pattern will change.

If you are ready to finally change the patterns that have been holding you back from the life you deserve, contact me to discuss how you can break the pattern.

Do you find yourself asking the big questions about life, but have no-one to talk about it with? Have you had to resort to having conversations with yourself in your own head? Are you sick of shallow small-talk that seems to dominate most conversations?

I was. My journey into spirituality began from a place a curiosity, and loneliness. Curiosity, because I was so intrigued by the big questions about life. I wanted to find out what happens when we die. I wanted to investigate the power of the mind. I wanted to know whether we could be reincarnated as a plant or animal. I wanted to understand whether everything really does happen for a reason (coincidences just seemed so lame – they’re for people in denial, right?) That good old chestnut, “Why are we here?” The amount of times I have tried to answer that question! I love piecing the seemingly random events of life together into the bigger picture, and making the connections as to why something had to happen in order to allow something else to happen, so that something even bigger could happen that benefits even more people.

And loneliness, because I had nobody to talk to about these things. Spirituality was just not a topic that people were generally interested in talking about. Sure, those people existed somewhere on the planet, but not in my social circles. I often found myself incredibly bored in social situations. The conversations were dominated by small talk. And not just random small talk, but the same, repetitive stuff, over and over. “So, how’s work going?” (Sigh) “Alright. It’s a job, I suppose. It pays the bills.” Yawn. If I tried initiating a conversation around something a little deeper, I’d get strange looks, and be told that I was being “too deep and meaningful”. Then they would change the subject, and go back to talking about the look on Sally’s husband’s cousins’s face when so-and-so did such-and-such, complaining about life in general and how miserable it makes them, and what a terrible outfit the person that just walked past is wearing.

I felt so disconnected. I wasn’t lonely in the sense of being physically isolated, although I did spend a lot of time on my own by choice. I had friends and people around me, but I found it difficult to connect with them on anything more than a superficial level. I cared about them and wanted to learn about them, but not through small talk. I couldn’t get into small talk, it seemed so pointless and fake. Who cares what other people are wearing? It was as though people were afraid of what thought-provoking, engaging conversation would do for them.

But what are they afraid of? Are they afraid of opening their mind? Afraid of opening their heart? Afraid to find out how much they don’t know about their world, and the universe at large? Afraid of having their lifelong beliefs that they’d been clinging to all of their life come crashing down around them, and being ‘wrong’?

Or has it simply not occurred to them that there could be more to life than chores, drudgery, and an endless quest to acquire more ‘things’? My interest in spirituality was also shaped through materialism. I reached a place where I had everything I wanted physically. I had a good job with a good income. My partner and I lived in a modern three story penthouse apartment in the city, in Sydney. The views were so incredible that on New Years Eve, we counted that we could see 16 sets of fireworks from way out in the suburbs all the way through to Sydney’s waterfront. It felt strange being asked what I’d like for Christmas and thinking that I already have everything I want. I reached a point where things no longer gave value to me, at least not the way they used to.

When you have everything you want physically, you are forced to shift your focus onto non-physical aspects of life where deep meaning can be found. The things I have collected make me happy, but at the end of the day they’re just that – things; and I can’t take them with me when I leave this world. When you start looking for a grander purpose, your problems become smaller in comparison. Once you start delving into the marvels of life, there is no going back. Enlightenment is one-way street. It is not a hobby that you switch off at a certain time of the day – it is the continuous expansion of all that you are.

So without anyone to share my curiosity, I found myself having conversations in my head. Not like a madman, but in the sense that the answers I got from my unconscious mind were often more profound and engaging than the answers I got (if any) from the people around me. And so began my love of contemplative meditation. I couldn’t wait to be alone to sit in silence and ponder. I couldn’t wait to come home and read. Most of my friends liked to spend their weekends drinking and drowing out their thoughts; I needed to engage my mind.

There’s a whole world that we haven’t even touched on beginning to understand. We are not taught about spirituality in school. It is one of those taboo topics that we are left to figure out for ourselves, like so many other unimportant facets of life that never pop up such as money, relationships, and death. Why would anyone need to know how to handle issues that frequently lead to crime and suicide, when we can be equipped for life with such valuable skills as algebra?

Throughout high school I was bullied relentlessly for expressing my individuality. This only reinforced my decision to continue doing just that, and has contributed in my mission to now encourage others to do the same. Through all of the anger directed at me, I sensed that the other kids yearned to do the same, but lacked the confidence. If there is one theme that high school represents, it is conformity. You could only wear your hair a certain few ways. Your backpack had to sit in a particular position on your back. Your socks had to be folded a certain way. Anything childlike was rejected and sameness prevailed. I had no desire to play the “same game” – and not even four years of bullying swayed me. What had happened to the happy, ambitious, energetic little kids I knew from primary school? Their childlike innocence seemed to have died inside of them during their rush to become adults. Sadly, many of them seemed to have never got it back. This happens all too often – the youthful, happy-go-lucky child becomes forgotten. As fast as the quest for maturity begins, the fear of ageing sets in. Life becomes complicated, and it doesn’t need to be.

I can consciously recall specific days in my childhood where I honestly wondered whether I was the happiest kid in the world. Now, that contemplation seems quite remarkable. Out of the billions of kids in the world, I genuinely wondered whether anyone was happier than I was. On those particular days, nothing out of the ordinary happened. We did things like go to the playground, run under the sprinkler at home, baked cookies, did some arts and crafts, and mum might have cooked my favourite meal for dinner, and okay, maybe my favourite dessert too.

But it is these simple things that give meaning to life. Things that make you smile. Focusing on what you appreciate. Giving energy to the things you love. Basking in the elements of nature. Taking risks. Being adventurous. Spontanaeity. New accomplishments. Challenging your limits. Passion for life that ignites the core of your soul. Sharing simple food with those you love. Laughing lots and taking yourself lightly. Doing work not to get paid, but getting paid as a result of doing what you love. Memories and experiences. It is things such as these where true joy can be found.

Keep things simple. Living in Sydney was a very fast-paced life and this was difficult to escape as the constant sense of rush is embedded into the energy of the city. As much as I loved it, I now reside back in my beautiful homestate of Tasmania with my partner, with the most amazing wilderness at our doorstep, and our quality of life has increased greatly. Remember to slow down. Life is not the past or the future. Life is your heart beating in this moment, right now. Give fully, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Through tribulation comes self-transformation.

Our purpose for the time that we spend on earth is to fulfill our soul’s growth. We each have lessons to learn, and a contribution to make. That contribution is the expansion and unfolding of our gift, and our continuous spiritual growth. The more we grow and develop, the better equipped we become to deal with the challenges that life throws our way. The more we grow, the bigger the challenges that we meet.

You may think that this doesn’t sound very appealing. After all, who wants bigger and bigger challenges, isn’t that a little scary? Don’t we just want life to be nice and easy and problem free? Well let me explain something. Life is a bit like the set of “Who wants to be a Millionaire?”. When you’re starting out in the game, you’re going to get the easy questions. The questions that there is a good chance you will be able to answer easily and confidently on your own, without needing to use up any lifelines. These are the sorts of questions you will get when you’re playing for $100 – $200. Not exactly life-changing amounts of money, really.

In life, if you’re sitting back in your chair with your legs crossed and not even raising a sweat, only drawing from resources that are habitual and familiar to you, expect to receive about as little back as you are putting in. If, on the other hand, you are regularly stretching yourself to find new ways to deal with challenges, expanding your awareness to think outside the square, and embracing all that is uncertain and unfamiliar, you will be similarly rewarded. You will be attracting not just the fruit from the lowest branches, but even sweeter and brighter fruit from the higher branches. The types of rewards that you perhaps never thought were available to you, simply because you had only ever thought about or reached for the lower branches.

Do you want to be playing for $100 or a million dollars? Life seems easiest when the challenges are small. But if your choice is between small challenges and big rewards – which approach is really going to make your life easier? Remember that if you choose to play big, the obstacles along your way will give you the strength you need to handle your new challenges.

You are either green and growing, or ripe and rotting. Everything in the universe must grow and contribute beyond itself, or it is eliminated. If you plant a tree in a pot, it will eventually outgrow the pot and require a bigger one, otherwise its growth will be stunted and restricted.

Is your own environment supporting and promoting your personal development and growth?

As we grow, we outgrow our surroundings. You will know when this happens because the things that once made you comfortable will start to restrict you and feel uncomfortable. Where can you renew your surroundings in order for you to thrive? Let’s take a look at some examples…

Your work - Whatever takes up most of your time should be conducive to your personal development and growth. If your job is no longer a challenge to you, it might be time to move on.

Clothing - Are you still wearing the same clothes you wore ten years ago? If your clothes don’t seem to make you look as good now as they did then, it might be time to renew your style.

Music - Have you been listening to the same playlist for far too long? I know I have a habit of “ruining” my favourite songs by playing them too many times. If the songs you always listen to don’t give you the same feeling of inspiration, or renewed sense of energy they once did, find some new music that is a match for the new you.

People - Are the people who surround you supportive and encouraging of your personal growth? If the people in your close circle are negative, judgemental or controlling, find yourself a tribe of positive uplifting people, who won’t drain your energy by bringing you down. Studies show that we start to ‘become’ the people we associate with, so steer clear of the “Aint it awful?” club, or “Can’t be done” people who complain a lot. Look for people who like to discuss ideas and possibilities.

Play small and stay small, or play big and grow stronger. Growth is part of the nature of life, and you must keep up with it. Life will be but a struggle if you do not set in place the conditions that will support your growth. Playing for $100.00 might seem easy, but if you don’t move on to the next level, life will outgrow you, and that will not be easy. Change is the essence of life. You can only cling to the rock for so long before you’ll get washed away. So if you forget about what is easy and want to play at a level that is going to be fun, get ready to ride the waves.

Life Coaching with Susan allowed me to figure out how I could combine my interests and education to have a career that I will love! With the right questions I realised I always knew what I wanted to do, but wasn’t sure I was committed to taking those necessary steps. Susan’s coaching gave me the inspiration and tools to explore the possibilities that I can make it happen. Along with a new career path I also found a new way of controlling emotions and focusing on the positive in life. I highly recommend Susan as a life coach and really enjoyed our sessions. Thank you Susan.

“I have just completed Life Coaching with Susan and it has been the best thing I have ever done in my life. I am just sorry it took me thousands and thousands of dollars, many self help courses, counseling, and psychologists, over a 30 year period, without any success – to get my life back after only 2 months coaching with Susan.

Before I started coaching, I was fairly dead inside and living a much compromised existence. I felt that everything that happened to me and how I felt were outside my control and I blamed others for my circumstances and my unhappiness. At night I would either overeat or drink alcohol to ease the void in my life. My self esteem and confidence were at an all time low and I felt life was a huge struggle.

Enter Susan Mathew from The Refined Mind…

From the 1st session I felt hope, even though it was small. Susan turned all of my negatives around and made me aware of the effect my negative mindset had on my life. She empowered me to accept that I have the power to change my life, and that I have 100% control over how I choose to feel and at any time. I learnt that my perfectionism was getting me in to trouble and learnt how to turn my negative behaviour into positive behavior.

I have just completed 2 months coaching and I am a new person without a doubt. I am confident, happy in control of life and have so much positive energy – thanks to Susan and her coaching methods and style. I no longer compulsively eat and I am in control of alcohol.

I have a new life, a future and every day is filled with happiness and contentment. My relationships have improved 100% and I am going out socialising with friends, something I didn’t do. I have taken up new challenges and I am a participator in life and not a spectator.

I would recommend that if you want to get the results that I have then you go no further and contact Susan. You can either waste more time reading self help books, attending courses or you can get your life back now and call Susan from The Refined Mind.”

“Hi Susan
Many thanks for the work you did with me the other night. Since our session, I have been finding that my decisions are clearer and I am taking active steps to de-clutter my mind and my surroundings and am already noticing that I have a far better sense of where I want to head than I did before our session.

For this I am very, very grateful – it is as though a fog has lifted and I have stepped into the light and can see the way forward.

Your insights and getting to the heart of the issues was fantastic and your compassionate approach made me feel at ease and free to challenge my beliefs – thank you.”

“I had a number of reservations initially about “life coaching”. Susan was recommended to me by my sister and a friend and I have had over six sessions now. This experience is nothing that I had imagined it to be. I appreciate how Susan challenges me to think about issues from different perspectives and to self reflect on my thought processes that are blocking me from achieving my goals. I have received coaching from Susan in several areas such as career and fitness. She has a bag of tricks for any situation which often result in “ah ha” moments for me. I have already recommended her to a number of friends”.

“I have had a number of one-on-one coaching sessions with Susan over the last few months and she has helped me to achieve significant change through coaching. Susan has enabled me to explore areas of my life which have been holding me back in a safe environment and the care and understanding that she has shown me has resulted in me feeling completely comfortable talking to her about a wide range of issues. The changes that I have achieved through being coached by Susan have transformed the relationships that I have with people close to me, have improved the way that I manage my business and have given me a new purpose and direction. I would not hesitate to recommend Susan to you.”

Ian

“After 6 sessions with Susan I learnt a lot about myself, and I was comfortable opening up to her about my issues that I had been holding in for many years. Susan helped me to realise a lot about life, relationships, and how to look beyond the past and move forward in a more positive way. I found that each session helped more and more, and I feel that I have grown a lot internally from just being able to talk to Susan. She is more than just a life coach - she is compassionate, friendly, intelligent and a friend I feel I can talk to anytime now.”

When we feel good, we are vibrating at a higher level. A high vibration attracts a richer experience of everything in life. It means more energy, better health, greater success, more fulfilling relationships, and financial abundance.

Everything in the universe is energy – from the sun, the water you drink, your own body, to the chair you are sitting on. The higher our energetic vibration, the higher the calibre of experiences that we will attract into our lives. At the higher end of the scale, you will open yourself up to new possibilities and opportunities in all areas of your life. People who vibrate at a high frequency are often described as ‘lucky’ because of the extraordinary experiences they attract. It is no coincidence that some people appear to ‘have all the luck’. We create our own experiences by emitting the same frequency that we want to attract back into our lives. Like attracts like.

Vibrating at a low frequency makes us more succeptible to illness. When we are feeling unhappy, sad or depressed etc, we vibrate at a lower frequency, and attract anything that is vibrating at the same frequency (negative people, ideas and environments, robberies, fights, illness etc).

Here are eleven easy ways to raise your vibration…

Master your mindset. Your mindset has a tremendous influence on your energetic vibration. Focusing on positive, expansive, empowering thoughts will increase your vibration. Keep negative emotions at bay (stress, anxiety, anger, resentment, criticism, guilt, regret, worry, etc). Refrain from negative, restrictive and disempowering thoughts, as these will lower your vibration.

Eat real foods. (Fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, clean water, natural fruit juice, etc). The way the foods naturally are before they make their way into a factory and without the addition of chemicals. Get less toxins and more vitamins. The natural sugars in fruit juice give you long lasting energy without the slump. Try eating a bowl of strawberries instead of your morning coffee, and feel the difference.

Keep your alcohol, junk food, and caffeine intake to a minimum. These are harmful to your body and thus lower your your vibration. They will also leave you with a ‘low’, or a slump when they wear off, which has the opposite effect of increasing your energy.

Keep up the flow of your energy. This is really the essence of it. Physical movement and exercise, flow of love, abundance, gratitude. “Stuck”, stagnant energy will be mirrored back to you in other areas of your life. Vitality requires us to keep things fresh and moving.

Breathe deeply and slowly. A lack of circulation of oxygen flow in your body is “stuck” energy and will branch into other problems.

Getting a massage. This is one of my favourite methods. The way that you feel physically and mentally after receiving a massage is a good indicator of what a high vibration can feel like; calm, relaxed and blissful, from the inside out. I personally find that massage awakens my creative energies. Whenever I am working on something that requires me to be creative, I love to get a massage while I’m conjuring up my plans.

Music. Such a fun and easy way to immediately raise your vibration. Turn it up while you do the housework, or while exercising. You will know when the music is a match for your energy because the vibration will ‘resonate’ with you. It could be upbeat fitness music that gets you up and moving, or something that sends a shiver down your spine and sings to your soul. Either way, the music should make you feel good.

Declutter. We all feel more energetic in a clean and tidy environment than in a dusty, messy, cluttered space.

Meditation. Quieten your mind and clear out mental distractions. Connect with nature as often as possible. There is a lot of stimuli and mental distactions in urban areas that can send our mind into a frenzy. Remove yourself from noisy hustle and bustle, billboards, bright lights, traffic jams and smog, and retreat to a beautiful landscape. Find your inner peace by quietening your mind, and opening your heart.

Grow. How can you maintain a healthy life force in your plant without it growing? That’s right, you can’t. Your own life force is the same. You are either green and growing, or ripe and rotting. Be committed to your own personal development. Be a student of life, and don’t ever cease your education.

Engage in your passion. Spending time in a job you don’t enjoy lowers your vibration. So either find a way to enjoy what you do, or do something else. Crucial to raising your vibration is following your passion, regardless of whether it is your job or a hobby. Nothing awakens our energy more that doing what we truly love. Give energy to your passion, and it will give energy to you.

Out with the old, in with the new!

Well another year is drawing to a close, allowing us to enjoy the familiar qualities that are imbued in this blissful time of the year. The joy of Christmas, some time off work to kick back and relax after all of our hard work, the appreciation of spending quality time woth loved ones, and embracing the festive spirit of sharing good food and drinks.

With the exitement of a new year approaching, now is a better time than ever to let go of old habits and replace them with new ones by making your New Years resolutions and empowering habits that will serve and support you. This is a great time to reflect on the year just gone.
Here are some questions to ponder:

What did 2011 represent for you?

What were the key significant events that have shaped your year?

What were your most memorable moments?

What were your greatest achievements?

What areas would you like to work on or improve?

What would you like to achieve in 2012?

Start making plans. Decide what you want to achieve, and write it down. Create a vision board. Write it in your diary. Tape it to your computer. Pin it up on the wall. Tell someone about it. Do whatever you can to remind yourself and keep your goal in the front of your mind.

Set the intention. Remove any language of uncertainty. Get rid of the shoulds, coulds and maybes. State your goal in positive, certain language. Be specific. Ensure that your goal is measurable. Give yourself a timeframe for completion. A year might seem like a long time to achieve your goal, but before you can say “someday…” the year will be half over - before you’ve even taken the first step.

So instead of: “Maybe some time next year I hope to lose some weight”.

You could say:

“By April 2012, I will have lost two dress sizes. I will have been working with a personal trainer 2 days per week that I will book in the first week of January, and I will be spending my Easter holidays reflecting on how fit and fabulous I look and feel”.

The latter statement is specific and measurable, has a timeframe, is stated as an intention rather than just a vague hope or wish, and is much more empowering language than the former statement.

Enjoy yourself. If you skip this crucial component you will have missed the point, and your goals will be tremendously more difficult to achieve. Enjoyment and achievement are not mutually exclusive. Look after yourself. Take time our for you. Be kind to yourself. Appreciate everything you have, regardless of whether you want more. Remember what life is all about. Life is to adore, not a chore. Enjoy the journey.
